Health insurance

Only cancel supplementary insurance once you have the acceptance

In basic insurance every insurer has to take you. In supplementary insurance they do not. Here is what to watch out for when switching.

Many people change their basic and supplementary insurance at the same time in autumn. That can make sense. What matters is the right order.

The big difference

Basic insurance is regulated by law and every health insurer must accept you. Supplementary insurance policies are private contracts. The new insurer asks health questions and may reject you or exclude individual benefits.

Important

Only cancel your supplementary insurance once you have the new insurer's acceptance in writing.

What to check

  • The notice period in your policy. It differs from contract to contract and is often earlier than the end of November.
  • Whether your contract has a minimum term.
  • Which benefits you really need, for example hospital ward, dental treatment, complementary medicine or glasses.
  • Whether you may cancel early if the premium is increased.

Basic and supplementary cover may be separate

You do not have to hold both policies with the same company. It is often sensible to change only the basic insurance and keep a good supplementary policy.
